We Are
Carpenters
Carpentry is the foundation of all trades. It is rare that any other trade can be executed without some aspect of carpentry being involved. We started as carpenters and continue to describe ourself as such. We embrace new technologies while still honoring the past. We can collaborate with BIM (building information modeling) while still owning traditional building squares that we know how to read!
Renovators
Without renovators communities will become lost due to a lack of connection to the past. The Fatlighter name pays homage to the past and our zeal is for renovations. Much like the human, structures have stories that impact the soul of the structure. It is our duty, as renovators, to preserve that soul while transforming the structure to meet current needs. We respect the stories, the soul, and the structure through the entire process.
Woodworkers
Our woodworking projects are largely composed of project specific pieces that support our renovations. However, at various times we will build custom pieces for retail sale. These pieces may be found at our showroom, local small businesses, or festivals. A large majority of the work through our shop is built by using reclaimed materials. Often the story of the material will tie back to the project it is associated with. Our shop is evolving as we renovate and may lend us capacity to take on more woodworking projects in the future. If you feel that we may be a good fit for your woodworking project please contact us!
Metal Crafters
Metal work is a small portion of our services but we have dabbled in it for years. We perform some of the work in-house and have sound relationships with quality, like-minded, shops for anything not performed in-house. The benefit of using us is that we have already vetted the shops and they understand our commitment to detail and quality. These shops are spread throughout the Shenandoah Valley with each specializing in a specific aspect of metal work. We have the capacity to handle any metal project including small repairs, CNC fabrication, and full steel structures.
Occasional BBQ
BBQ brings people together! At Fatlighter Co., we celebrate milestones with BBQ, On larger projects we bring our pits, and open fire equipment, to the project to celebrate milestones such as ground-breaks, topping-out, or final completions.
Anyone can be invited to these ‘Ques to include owners, design teams, trade workers, and neighbors. Clients may also be invited to an annual event known as Stone-Q. This event is partially sponsored by Fatlighter Co. and is a twist on the folk story, Stone Soup.
Though we are not (and do not intend to be) in the catering business, from time-to-time Fatlighter Co. will perform live fire cooking demonstrations and caters smaller events. This service is primarily offered to non-profit, community-minded, and private events that we share a mutual interest in. All donations from this service directly benefit the Fatlighter Foundation.
Outdoor Living
Fatlighter Foundation
Fatlighter Foundation strives to create pathways for education, on the job experience, and job placement for individuals aspiring to excel in trade related fields. Our parameters are intentially broad to afford us the flexibility to assist in “outside of the box” approaches. A portion of Fatlighter Company proceeds are invested into the foundation quarterly. Additionally, all proceeds from occasional BBQ events benefit the foundation.
